We are Saints Sled Dog Rescue, a non-profitable charity dedicated to Alaskan Malamute and Siberian Husky dog rescue (sled dogs) across the UK.
Saints Sled Dog Rescue was created back in 2013 by Heather Saville when a little girl Athena, the three legged Siberian Husky couldn’t find a rescue placement due to needing medical treatment. Foster Mum, Heather took her into her care raising £800 in just a few short hours covering costs of her leg amputation and after care!!
From that moment Heather KNEW she had to do something different and she founded SSDR – who rescue sled dog breeds NO MATTER WHAT!
We now rescue on average 120 dogs per year – mainly Siberian Husky’s and Alaskan Malamute’s.
Siberian Husky Dog Rescue UK & Alaskan Malamute Dog Rescue UK
At Saints Sled Dog Rescue we specialise in Alaskan Malamute and Siberian Husky dog rescue UK wide … Yes, we are gluttons for punishment BUT there is a reason WHY we focus mainly on these sled dog breeds.
Sled dogs for YEARS have grown in popularity, from things like TV shows and Disney films has meant owners purchase sled dogs WITHOUT the research. These ancient working breed still hold the roles of their ancestors such as hunting small fury creatures with their high prey drives, liking to be in large numbers and pulling like freight trains with the love to RUN!
These are a majority of the reasons sled dogs come into our care, we aim to help educate and support sled dog owners with the balance of exercise, training, good diets and a routine to keep this amazing breed happy in their homes. A lot of breeds are misunderstood including Husky and Malamute types, they are not your usual dog they are strong willed, clever, spirited working animal with the need for a purpose.
Siberian Husky and Alaskan Malamute breeds are stunning to the eye but they are also working breeds so there’s a few things to consider before adopting a husky or rescuing a malamute!
Husky’s and Malamutes …
- need approx. 2 hours of exercise per day.
- PULL ON A LEAD!
- can be strong minded, wilful dogs who need firm, but fair approach in training
- weigh from 16 kg – 50kg in some giant Malamutes
- can be destructive if un-exercised or bored, causing destruction around the home.
- LOVE to talk and howl
- shed fur all year round but blow their coats twice yearly
- should NEVER be let off lead in un-enclosed areas, especially near livestock
- VERY rarely get along with small furries and have a high prey drive
- need daily routine of good diet, exercise, training and mental stimulation
Get the balance of exercise, training, good diets and a routine right and you have an amazing friend for life.
SSDR – Adopt An Alaskan Malamute & Siberian Husky Dog Rescue UK
We have SO many dogs looking for homes and even more waiting for foster placements. ALL our dogs are assessed for a minimum of 2 weeks before being re-homed. They are also vaccinated, neutered and have any medical treatments needed BEFORE leaving for their forever homes.
We ask for an adoption donation of £400 for a dog under 12 months old and £350 for a dog over. This donation fee goes towards the neutering, vaccination, flea and worm treatments costs of all dogs that come into our Alaskan Malamute & Siberian Husky dog rescue UK.
All adoptions are subject to a home check carried out by a member of Saints Sled Dog Rescue.
At Saints Sled Dog Rescue we aim to match the dogs to homes which suit their needs, for more information on how to adopt a sled dog with us go to our ADOPTION page.
