RSPCA Cornwall – Dog Rescue Cornwall
For dog rescue Cornwall please consider the RSPCA. In 1993 the four RSPCA branches in Cornwall pooled resources. They became one registered charity, Cornwall Branch, and they set about realising their dream of owning a rehoming Centre in the county. The branch bought Higher Quoit farm near St. Columb in 1994. It is an ideal site of over six acres, centrally located, with good road access. It provides a base from which animals can be adopted and is a focus for the work of the RSPCA throughout Cornwall.
Thanks to the support of the people of Cornwall the Centre accepted its first cats and dogs for rehoming in 1996. Due to subsequent generous funding provided by Mrs Patricia Venton, phase 2 of the building project was completed in 1999.
In common with most animal rehoming centres, the number of adoptions is down on previous years due to the nature of the dogs signed into our care. Most have not been properly socialised as puppies or trained and, having been left alone for too long, have been naughty or destructive in the home – hence their being given to the RSPCA.
We keep many dogs for more than two months – some up to a year – in order to work with a qualified animal behaviourist at our expense, to improve the dogs’ behaviour and make them rehomeable. Animals are not euthanised because they are long stayers – we just work harder to find them a new home.
The Centre comprises:
- Kennels for 57 dogs and pens for 72 cats.
- Accommodation for a wide range of small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and gerbils.
- An aviary for wild birds where they can recover from trauma before being released.
- A compound for swans, geese and ducks which need rest and recuperation.
- A fully equipped room for veterinary treatment for animals in our care.
- Office space for training sessions and educational use and a small shop.
Twenty staff members are employed at the Centre and there are also a dozen volunteers who attend regularly working as kennel assistants, dog walkers, cat socialisers and serving in the shop.
About RSPCA Dog Rescue Cornwall
We are a self-funded RSPCA branch based in St Columb, Cornwall, dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming animals in need. Since opening our doors in 1996 our dog rescue Cornwall has helped thousands of dogs and other animals find safety and loving homes.
At the Venton Rehoming Centre, we care for dogs from all backgrounds – from strays to animals rescued from cruelty cases. Every dog gets the love, care, and second chance they deserve.
Beyond our dog rescue Cornwall Rehoming Centre, our Animal Welfare Officers work across the county, reaching the animals most in need. Through rescue, education, and support, we help both animals and their owners, making a lasting impact in our community.
The Branch has big plans over the coming years to strengthen our dog rescue Cornwall and ultimately be in a position able to help even more dogs in need.
We help animals regardless of their age, medical or behavioural needs, to give them all a second chance. Being an separate independent charity means we rely on local donations to keep our doors open to animals in need. By supporting our Branch, you’ll be helping hundreds of animals in Cornwall every year.
Dog Rescue Cornwall – The Benefits
Adopting a rescue dog is a profound act of compassion and kindness that impacts not only the dog’s life but also the broader community. Shelters and organisations like the RSPCA Cornwall are often overwhelmed with the number of animals needing homes, and adopting a dog from these facilities alleviates some of this pressure. It allows shelters to take in more animals and provide better care for those still waiting for their forever homes. By choosing to adopt, you are directly contributing to the reduction of overpopulation in shelters and advocating for responsible pet ownership.
Rescue dogs often come from backgrounds of neglect, abuse, or abandonment, and adopting one provides them with a second chance at a happy life. These dogs are just as capable of love, loyalty, and companionship as any other dog, and they deserve the opportunity to live in a safe and loving environment. When you adopt a rescue dog, you are not only giving them a new start but also setting an example for others to follow, encouraging a culture of adoption over buying from breeders or pet stores.
Moreover, adopting a rescue dog helps combat the unethical practices associated with puppy mills and backyard breeders. These establishments often prioritize profit over the well-being of the animals, leading to poor living conditions and severe health issues for the dogs. By choosing to adopt, you are taking a stand against these inhumane practices and supporting organizations that prioritize animal welfare. In this way, adoption is not only a personal decision but also a statement of your values and commitment to ethical treatment of animals.

I'm not a charity and don't run this site for profit - I fund the site myself and do things in my spare time with the sole aim of helping all those amazing dog rescues in the UK.
I'm completely self-taught in website development so, the occasional donation helps me keep things going, learn more and build a better site. Any donations are always gratefully recieved and really appreciated - thank you so much.
