The British Chihuahua Rescue
The British Chihuahua Rescue are dedicated to relieving the suffering and distress of Chihuahuas in need of rehoming due to changes in circumstances, hardship, neglect or owner’s ill health. Our rescue was established in 1988 and gained recognition as a registered charity (number 1094417) in 2002. We are managed by a board of trustees and staffed entirely by volunteers, with no paid employees.
Why A Chihuahua
Chihuahuas are a lot of dog in a small body. They are clever little dogs and actually have the largest brains when compared to their body size of all the dogs. They love to learn and respond well to positive reward based training.
Just because they are small it certainly doesn’t mean they are any less of a dog and they need the same sort of consistency with training to prevent unwanted behaviours. To help keep their little minds occupied you can have fun with sniff walks, short training sessions, puzzle toys and/or free time in a secure field.
Chihuahuas also love getting out and about. The PDSA recommend a minimum of half an hour a day to stay happy and healthy plus additional playtime with you.
We think Chihuahuas make wonderful companions … but we may be slightly biased !
Adopt From The British Chihuahua Rescue
When Chihuahuas first come into Rescue, they are placed with one of our wonderful foster carers where their veterinary and behaviour needs are assessed. They are given decompression time, learn to adjust to a new environment, see how they react with other dogs and children (if appropriate) and what their ongoing needs are likely to be. This means we are able to tell you a bit about each dog and their personalities and also enables us to match potential adopters with the right dog(s).
Our Chihuahuas come into our care for a variety of reasons and back stories but they all need love – you can meet our dogs here >>>
Your adoption journey starts after you’ve spotted your next best friend or friends hiding amongst our current pack of love bugs. If you are interested in adopting one of our available Chihuahuas, please fill out the form you will find on each page and we will be in touch. Please note that we are a very small team of dedicated volunteers and are working through the applications as quickly as possible.
We offer ongoing support to all of our adopters. We do not discriminate against people in terms of age, economic or residential status. As long as you can love our Chihuahuas and can keep them healthy and safe then we welcome an application from you.
Please be aware that due to the nature of rescue we can never predict how many Chihuahuas might need our care. This means it can take time to match you with your perfect pup.
Many of the dogs we rehome are elderly and need ongoing medication, such as heart tablets. We can assist with these costs post-adoption to ensure that our Chihuahuas receive the care they need without placing undue financial strain on their new families. This support is determined on a case-by-case basis.
Obviously we rehome nationally.
Support The British Chihuahua Rescue
As a volunteer-driven charity, we rely on the generosity and support of the community to continue our work. Contributions in any form, whether financial, your time and expertise, or resources, are deeply appreciated and vital to our mission.
Veterinary treatment is our most significant expense. Many Chihuahuas that come into our care require treatments costing over £500 before they can be adopted.

I'm not a charity and don't run this site for profit - I fund the site myself and do things in my spare time with the sole aim of helping all those amazing dog rescues in the UK.
I'm completely self-taught in website development so, the occasional donation helps me keep things going, learn more and build a better site. Any donations are always gratefully recieved and really appreciated - thank you so much.
