Dog Rescue Bristol – Bristol Animal Rescue Centre support dogs and other animals on every step of their journey, from medical treatment, to specialist care and behaviour training. When the pet is ready, we carefully match them with loving new owners.
Established back in 1887, originally as The Bristol Home for Lost and Starving Dogs, we are Bristol’s longest standing and largest local animal charity.
Our dedicated team works hard to offer shelter, specialist care and a second chance at a happy life for thousands of pets. We’re also here for pet owners in our community who need support and advice.
Our mission is to ensure animals in need within our community* receive the compassion, care and respect they deserve. We are committed to helping, healing and homing animals for as long as they need us.
*Our community is the Bristol & District Branch area, whilst working in close coordination with animal welfare partners nationally and in surrounding areas to ensure the best possible welfare for all animals”.
Dog Rescue Bristol – Adopt A Dog
We’re thrilled that you’re considering adopting a pet with us. By adopting a rescue pet, you’re actually helping two animals – the one you take home and the one who takes their place, so we’d encourage everyone to adopt, not shop for a pet. When you adopt a rescue pet, a little more patience may be needed; it can take time to find the right match for you.
Some of the animals we care for have suffered emotionally in the past and as a result have complex needs. These are often behavioural, but sometimes it might mean that significant medical support is needed. This means they might need specific environments and owners who can be flexible to their needs.
We understand just how difficult it is to find the perfect pet for you. We would love to speak to everyone, but we have hundreds of people coming to us every week and we are a small team, so it’s just not possible. On the link below we hope to be able to answer many of your questions about how to adopt a rescue pet, but if there’s anything else you need to know please get in touch with us.

Dog Rescue Bristol
We are proud to hold such a long heritage in Bristol, as the oldest and largest animal charity in the city. Bristol Animal Rescue Centre is the name for two linked charities – Bristol Dogs & Cats Home and RSPCA Bristol & District Branch. We are an independent charity, and although we are proud to be affiliated with the RSPCA, we receive no automatic funding from them. We rely almost entirely on local support within the community to fund our vital work.
We are the main rescue centre taking in stray animals in Bristol and are proud to hold the stray dog contract with Bristol City Council. We do everything we can to reunite lost pets with their families. Those who are not claimed are welcomed into our care, and we work tirelessly to find the perfect new loving family for them.
